I was there

I’ve had some exciting encounters with AI art in recent months. Many thoughts have also crossed my mind on this topic. There are still many things that need to be discussed in this regard. What about copyright? What about morals and ethics? What about sustainability and energy consumption? How will art change and how will we change?

I was quite sceptical about AI art right from the start and I still am. But I was also able to find some opportunities and parallels to my artistic work. Interestingly, also to analogue photography. And I had the opportunity to meet some very inspiring people such as Boris Eldagsen.

Polaroids in the consumer sector were previously regarded as evidence of really having been at a place. They captured an unreproducible moment and symbolised a memory. (I could insert an exciting Blade Runner analogy here)

When I looked into image AIs, such as stable diffusion or mid-journey, I noticed an interesting parallel. AI images are in some way also non-reproducible prmomptographic snapshots (unless you have the seed).

So you can also experience moments in the AI universe that are unique, even if they never took place.

Politicians, monarchs, autocrats are public figures and on the one hand there are enough pictures and on the other hand there are a few thoughts about privacy and the right to the image behind them. What also appeals to me is that although the people in the pictures look very similar, there is always something alienating about them. You don’t have that comparison with anonymous people.

The pictures themselves also reveal that they are Al-generated if you look closely. I removed a lot of imperfections by inpainting and outpainting, but I didn’t want to create a clean „photograph“, I wanted to let the medium stand on its own. So I just hid it a little. I think the flaws are important in this context, because in analogue photography (today) they are often given an artistic value, just like the aesthetics of collodion plates or Polaroids (take a look at Oliver Mark). But what value does the mistake of an Al have?

Party scenes are of course also simply something intimate in such circles and I stage myself here as part of it, which I am not at all.

In den letzten Monaten hatte ich einige spannende Begegnungen mit KI-Kunst. Dabei sind auch mir viele Gedanken durch den Kopf gegangen zu diesem Thema. Es gibt noch viele Dinge, die diesbezüglich diskutiert werden müssen. Wie sieht es aus mit Copyright? Wie sieht es aus mit Moral und Ethik? Wir sieht es mit der Nachhaltigkeit und dem Energieverbrauch aus? Wie wird sich die Kunst verändern und wie werden wir uns verändern?

Ich war der KI-Kunst von Anfang an recht skeptisch gegenüber und bin es auch jetzt noch. Aber ich konnte auch einige Chancen und auch Parallelen zu meinem künstlerischen Schaffen finden. Interessanterweise auch zur analogen Fotografie.

Polaroids im Consumer-Bereich galten bisher als Zeugnis, wirklich an einem Ort gewesen zu sein. Sie fingen einen nicht reproduzierbaren Moment ein und sind Symbol für eine Erinnerung. (Ich könnte hier eine spannende Blade Runner Analogie einfügen)

Als ich mich mit den Bild KIs, wie stable Diffusion oder mid-journey, beschäftigte, bemerkte ich eine spannende parallele. Auch KI-Bilder sind nicht reproduzierbare Momentaufnahmen (außer man hat den seed).

Somit kann man auch in dem Universum der KI Momente erleben, die einzigartig sind, wenngleich sie nie stattgefunden haben.
